Federal Reserve Lowers Interest Rates for Second Time This Year During Financial Instability

The US monetary authority lowered interest rates on midweek, representing the second reduction in the current year amid economic turbulence originating from the federal government shutdown and tariff policies.

Move Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs even with ongoing price increases.

Fed Statement Notes Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement notes. “Inflation has moved up and remains somewhat elevated.”

Federal Closure Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Gathering of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.

Data Gap Affects Policy Decisions

The Fed usually analyzes labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, including the count of employment gains created to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was published in early September, before the shutdown, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the employment scene in August.

The figure of positions added to the economy in the summer month was lower by over 100k since the spring, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the highest since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Show Continued Decline

Though BLS was scheduled to release September’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its release when the shutdown began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated earlier this month that the business segment cut thirty-two thousand positions in September, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated recently, a trend he had earlier attributed comes from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Rise

Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still released its price statistics for last month that showed that costs are rising, although gradually. Costs increased 3% over the past twelve months, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
