Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French warplanes in a combined operation on an underground arms cache in Syrian territory used by the IS group, as stated by the British defence ministry.
The facility, located using reconnaissance, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was located in mountains just above Palmyra in the heart of Syria.
"Our fighter planes utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a series of approach shafts providing entry to the depot... early reports are that the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.
There was no sign of any civilian casualties in the strike conducted Saturday night and each participating jet returned safely, the ministry further stated.
The British jets were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.
IS - also known as the so-called Islamic State - established extremist governance over significant areas in Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.
"This action demonstrates British leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eradicate any resurgence of IS and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey remarked.
RAF aircraft have conducted patrols over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of IS after its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the authorities noted.
"I must thank every member of British forces participating in this strike for their skill and their courage," the Defence Secretary said. "They were part of a great many British troops deployed over the festive period. This operation, to eliminate terrorist threats who endanger our security, shows how British military are always on standby, all year round, ensuring Britain's security at home and strong abroad."
During December, the US military carried out what it called a "massive strike" on IS targets in the country, following an ambush killed two US troops and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.
The UN reports IS still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Iraq and Syria.
